Remembering Massimo Vignelli
It's awfully sad to think of the passing of Massimo Vignelli. As I reflect on my life and work as a designer, I realize that Massimo is like a beacon, a bright constant presence.
Over the past 150 years, the YMCA of Greater New York has built a network of 24 locations serving nearly half a million people in neighborhoods across the 5 boroughs. Two Twelve is thrilled to be partnering with the YMCA to develop a comprehensive, adaptable wayfinding and signage system that will unify the experience at every branch.
Two Twelve is a public information design firm with roots in wayfinding, the art and science of helping people navigate the built environment. A pioneering force in the environmental—or experiential—graphic design (EGD) industry, Two Twelve has since expanded its capabilities to include sophisticated information design as well as signage. With the belief that the principles of wayfinding can be applied to complex information as well as complex spaces, we take pride in our strategy-driven approach to projects of all sizes.
In our work, we strive to make the world a better place through design. We appreciate that public information design is for everyone, and we leverage our collaborative process to advocate for the user experience and generate better outcomes.
We excel in tackling challenging environments and information. Every project has a hidden logic, and we apply a collaborative, creative process to build strategies and develop designs from that logic. We value the diverse perspectives of our team and benefit from their varied approaches to complex problems. With an emphasis on sharing ideas and resources, our process yields custom solutions for each and every project.

In May 2014, Two Twelve celebrates our 34th anniversary. To mark this moment we dug back in the archives for pictures of the early days. Have a look!
On April 25, 2014 at the AIGA Centennial Gala, Sylvia Harris was posthumously awarded the AIGA Medal. The medal citation reads - Recognized for an unerring commitment to using design to improve the civic experience and for influencing a generation of designers as a teacher and mentor. In 1980 Sylvia Harris and her two Yale classmates David Gibson and Juanita Dugdale founded Two Twelve. Though Sylvia left the company in 1994 to found her own consulting firm, the commitment to design in the public interest that was made by the firms founders in the 1980's, continues to drive the work and mission of Two Twelve, now led by David Gibson and Ann Harakawa.
On April 25, 2014, AIGA held its 100th annual gala in New York City. Two Twelve principal David Gibson was co-chair of the AIGA Centennial Gala alongside Mark Randall of Worldstudio. A project, known as Celebration AIGA 1914-2014 and spearheaded by Worldstudio, engaged leading designers from around the country to select one year from the 10 decades of AIGA’s history and make a social, political or cultural statement about that year. The remarkable collection of 101 designs became the centerpiece of the gala decor which was created by Two Twelve designers Chris Dina and Linzi Eggers. The result was a glittering evening of community and celebration for over 500 people, by all accounts, a memorable evening.
After what seemed like a perpetual polar vortex, we think it is finally safe to say our puffy coats and mittens can be stored away for spring. The days of sunshine have been few and far between, but it seems they are now here to stay. This latest post in our Shots from the Street series serves as a gracious welcome to Spring and all of its Instagram-able sunshine-y glory.
Last October, Two Twelve participated in Image of the Studio: A Portrait of New York City Graphic Design, an exhibition that created a shared a portrait of what it means to be a New York design studio in 2013. Similar to how we approach design challenges we sought to visually represent our studio's philosophy and aesthetic in a 30'' x 30'' square.
We work on multiple projects at a time for hours each day. While we love what we do, the heavy workload can wear on us and our imaginations from time to time. To ease our minds and avoid falling into one of those ever-dreaded "creative slumps," we find inspiration in everyday activities. Morning commutes, after-work errands, and even seemingly gloomy, rainy days can become muses for art. Here are a few of our favorite recent design inspirations as captured on Instagram.
Yesterday I pulled into the parking lot at one of the stops on my pre-Christmas Saturday shopping outing. As it happens, a reading of Dickens Christmas Carol was playing on the NPR station, read by a selection WNYC and WQXR radio hosts.
As the story transitioned from the Ghost of Christmas Present to the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, the warm familiar voices gripped my spirit and I started weeping.
Currently the U.S is operating without a long-term strategy for meeting our national priorities. By understanding the current state of America’s infrastructure, can we learn how to build a sustainable future for ourselves?
Two Twelve worked closely with Building America’s Future Educational Fund to feature these issues in a report, “Falling Apart and Falling Behind.” The report presented a storyline, information hierarchy and critical data in a straightforward way that highlighted the urgency of a growing problem.
