The Johns Hopkins Hospital
Perkins + Will
Baltimore, Maryland, USA
Founded in Baltimore in 1873,The Johns Hopkins Hospital is widely regarded as one of the world's leading medical institutions and consistently tops US News and World Report's list of America's Best Hospitals.
Perkins + Will asked Two Twelve to create a sophisticated signage and wayfinding system for the new clinical buildings they were designing for the hospital - the Sheikh Zayed Tower and the Charlotte R. Bloomberg Children's Center.
Because these buildings were to form the new front door of the institution, Two Twelve conducted a comprehensive wayfinding analysis of the entire hospital. Once that analysis was completed, we developed a wayfinding strategy that would knit together the new buildings and the existing historic campus. With that strategy came a well-conceived naming hierarchy that provides patients and families coming to the hospital a seamless flow of information to guide them into the hospital and to their final destination. The side by side locations of the Zayed and Bloomberg towers each with an Entrance and an Emergency Entrance presented particular wayfinding challenges in directing people to their correct destination. The Hopkins Loop was named and signed as the great connector that links all buildings in the hospital.
Working closely with the architects, the representatives of the major donor and the in-house hospital team, we were able to create signage that blends artfully with hospital fabric and works well for the grand ground floor public areas and the clinical spaces on the upper floors.
The result is a comprehensive Wayfinding system that met the needs of the hospital design and development team and was truly useful for the hospital's guests and customers.
