The Studio Museum in Harlem
The Studio Museum in Harlem is an internationally recognized destination that showcases work by artists of African descent, and it has been the leading museum representing black artists since 1968.
In celebration of the Museum’s fiftieth anniversary, they have partnered with Adjaye Associates and Cooper Robertson to design and build a new home for the collection. Currently under construction, the five-story, 82,000 square foot, purpose-built structure will more than double the Museum’s space for exhibitions, education, and the artist-in-residence program.
Two Twelve is working with the Museum’s leadership, the architects, and branding consultant OCD to design a wayfinding and signage program that will integrate with the building’s architecture and uphold the project team’s vision for The Studio Museum in Harlem. Our designs reflect the inclusive, engaging mission of the institution and incorporate both static and digital signage for a dynamic visitor experience.
Encompassing interior and exterior signage, donor recognition, and a custom suite of symbols, Two Twelve’s work for The Studio Museum in Harlem responds to the institution’s branding, the architects’ vision, and the visitors’ needs. Our wayfinding and signage program is intentionally understated to complement—not distract from—the art, and it utilizes symbols wherever possible to communicate with the Museum's international audience.
We are thrilled to be part of the Museum’s next chapter, and we look forward to seeing how the new building will support this significant institution as it takes on an even greater role in the cultural life of the city.
