Bright Lights, Candy City
The holiday season at Two Twelve kicks off a myriad of staff favorite events including the harvest potluck, holiday party, and best-loved gingerbread competition. 2017 ended no differently from previous years with a candy-fueled competition, but this time with a challenging new theme. Teams were drawn randomly and were prompted to choose a New York City landmark as their gingerbread creation.
Each team was given standard gingerbread kits as well as a smorgasbord of candy, plus a bonus edible item of their choice. Judges critiqued the final creations based on overall appearance, creativity, structure, use of materials, and teamwork.
For one hour, Two Twelvers were up to their elbows in icing and crumbs while Christmas music played in the background. Some teams worked quietly with focused tasks such as sculpting gumdrop carousel horses or lining up candy canes, while others panicked as their tall gingerbread tower crumpled.
In the end, each team presented a unique and creative version of sites we see in New York: Jane's Carousel, Rockefeller Center, the Oculus, and our local F line subway entrance.
