212 Day
by David Gibson
Today is February 12th, 2013 - in other words 2/12/13. For us, that makes it Two Twelve Day. Sometime in the mid 1980's I realized that this company, founded at 212 York Street in New Haven and located for almost thirty years in the 212 area code, could lay claim to one of the days in the year and make it ours.
So what does it mean? Is it just another day? After all one day can seem much like all of the others on the annual calendar. But we have invested this one with special meaning. For us it's a chance to reflect on the collective enterprise that is Two Twelve, a remarkable group of people who share a vision and a common purpose. We create design for people and places, we call this practice public information design. With wayfinding systems we enhance public places and help people navigate through them. With our communications programs we, on the one hand, help organizations present their ideas and visions to the public, while on the other we create tools to help people access the complex information they need for their daily lives. In our years in New York, we have helped people see the polar bears and penguins at the zoo, get cash from their ATMs or shop for their favorite New York specialties at a market. We've helped the Mayor and corporate CEOs explain their visions to citizens and shareholders and we are now working to make New York's world class health care more accessible to those who need it.
We are proud to contribute to the life of this great city. In total, our aim is to harness the power of Design for a Better Experience.
As you read this blog post take a look at the digital surroundings. You have landed at our new website. Our blog is now called "Two Twelve Voices." Have a look around, but suspend judgement for a moment. We couldn't wait to share, so you're one of the few getting a sneak peak as we work out the bugs and smooth out the rough edges. Soon we'll have more projects to share with you and more stories to tell. When all is said and done we hope this new site represents the breadth of our practice and reflects the diversity of our design endeavors.
So, as we contemplate who will be the next pope, what the President will say in the State of the Union address tonight OR who's going to win Best Picture at the Oscars, let us give thanks for the work that we do, our staff and collaborators with whom we do it and the great people and organizations who are our clients.
